Bierstadt, Albert - Sunlight and Shadow Fine Art Print
A Museum Quality Print of Sunlight and Shadow by Albert Bierstadt. The artist completed this oil on canvas in the year 1862. The size of the original artwork is 41 by 35 inches and now hangs in the Fine Arts Museum of San Fransisco. This painting portrays a view of the Gothic Revival Chapel of the Lowenburg Royal Castle near Kassel Germany, being based on an oil sketch the artist made in 1855 when he was a student at Dusseldorf Academy. Given the religious subject, Bierstadt's title evokes associations with spiritual enlightenment and darkness. The impoverished woman who is nursing her infant, serves as a traditional Christian symbol of Charity is cast in a shadow on the steps outside. The oak tree, a symbol of enduring faith in the face of adversity was adopted as the National Tree of Germany.
