The size of the original artwork is 41 by 35 inches and now hangs in the Fine Arts Museum of San Fransisco. This painting portrays a view of the Gothic Revival Chapel of the Lowenburg Royal Castle near Kassel Germany, being based on an oil sketch the artist made in 1855 when he was a student at Dusseldorf Academy. Given the religious subject, Bierstadt's title evokes associations with spiritual enlightenment and darkness. The impoverished woman who is nursing her infant, serves as a traditional Christian symbol of Charity is cast in a shadow on the steps outside.
