An antique 1949 Maine Passenger Car License Plate for sale at Brandywine General Store, this '49 ME DMV Auto Tag is black with orange letters, Maine and the 1949 metal tab are at the top, Vacation Land at the bottom. Most of the plates in 1948 were made of brass, but the later registrants of the year received aluminum license plates, which this is one of those. Maine was hit hard by the metal shortages of World War II, so they experimented with brass during 1948, in 47 no plates were issued at all. When the brass ran out, they switched over to aluminum in the last part of 1948, then issued the aluminum tab in 49. The Maine Department of Motor Vehicles also only issued a single tag for the state's motorists to use on the back of their vehicles during the model year of 1949. The DMV Registration number is 188 - 607 with the condition being excellent minus, also rare with this plate because the paint came off easily. The picture shows the actual 1949 Maine aluminum Car license plate that is available for sale at Brandywine General Store.
