An archival premium Quality Art Print of Prisoners From the Front by Winslow Homer for sale by Brandywine General Store. The original size of this oil on canvas is 24 by 38 inches and now resides at the Metropolitan Museum of Art by gift of Mrs. Frank Porter in 1922. Winslow completed this work in 1866, just 1 year after the Civil War ended and most critics agree that this painting established Homer's reputation as an artist. The materials and sketches Homer collected during the Civil War as an Artist and Correspondent served as subjects for some of his first oil paintings. This work of art represents an actual scene from the War portraying Brigadier General Francis Channing Barlow after he has captured several Confederate Officers on June 21, 1864. One Southern Officer, still with nice boots and cap, is still standing proud and looking defiant, one is an old man in bedraggled torn clothing while the 3rd prisoner looks young and inexperienced and wishing he could be anywhere else on Earth. The background depicts the Battlefield at Petersburg Virginia. This painting went through several changes before Homer was satisfied with the end result. We have changed the look of this painting also, the original is very scratched and worn so we did a good bit of post processing to get out the majority of these blemishes, but some of the color has been removed and a slight blurriness or glow has been added.
