$9.99

A Museum Quality Print of the Rexrode Mill at New Hampden Virginia which is just outside the country village of Blue Grass for sale by Brandywine General Store. This mill was founded by John Rexrode who was the son of the pioneer Zachariah Rexrode Sr and it was operated by the Rexrode family for 4 generations. The mill was a water powered gristmill where farmers would bring their wheat and corn to be ground into flour, meal and animal feeds. By 1832 a sawmill was added to this enterprise. Power for the mills came from a dam from the South Branch of the Potomac River some 500 feet above the mill. The water flowed down the millrace to a waterwheel on the side of the mill house. This wheel was replaced by a water turbine around 1880. The mill eventually closed around 1942, staying open longer than most rural gristmills. Picture #334 an original archival scenic art print by Brandywine General Store.
