A premium quality art print of the Wild Eastern Red Columbine for sale at Brandywine General Store. Our premium, archival artwork shows a large plant of the wild eastern red columbine which was found along the Smoke Hole Road beside the South Branch of the Potomac River in Pendleton County West Virginia. The eastern columbine grows up to 20 inches tall and has 2 inch long flowers on slender spikes. These flowers are loaded with nectar making them favorites of hummingbirds and butterflies. This flower prefers rocky sandy soils, if planted in rich topsoil they will grow to tall and scraggly. The genus name Aquilegia comes from the Latin aquila which means eagle and refers to the spurred petals that many believe resemble an eagles talons. The Native American Indians used these flowers in herbal concoctions including rubbing the crushed seeds on the mens hands for a love potion. Picture #115
