The author was Francois Andre Michaux with many illustrations by French Botanical Artist H. J. Redoute. The Over Cup White Oak was described in North America Sylva thus. This tree is most common beyond the Allegheny Mountains in the fertile districts of Kentucky and West Tennessee, upper Louisiana and near the Missouri. The Americans call it Bur Oak and Over the Cup White Oak. A beautiful tree growing to around 60 feet in height with the largest leaves and acorns of any oak species in the United States. The wood is inferior to the White Oak and is little esteemed in America. This oak is remarkable when young for the corky appearance of its bark. Quercus Macrocarpa. Botanical art print #100
