Edward Lear finally reached Jerusalem on March 27, 1858 after two previous failed attempts. His diary reveals that the artist was deeply moved by what he found this Holy City marveling at such places and things such as The Temple and the Two Domes, the Ravine of the Valley of Jehosaphat, Absalom's Pillar, the Village of Siloam and many other religious places and artifacts. This painting was commissioned by Sir James Reid who was a recently retired Supreme Justice of the Ionian Islands. Lear tried several spots in which to paint this Holy City but was not satisfied with any of the locations, he finally found the view from the Mount of the Olives to his liking, affording him an unobstructed view of most of the city.
