King, Charles Bird - Prairie Wolf a Native American Portrait
An archival premium Quality art Print of Prairie Wolf a Native American Portrait by Charles Bird King for sale by Brandywine General Store. The artist painted this canvas in 1822 and it is now on display in the White House Library. Chief Shaumonekusse or Prairie Wolf was born around 1785 and died in 1837. He was the leader of the Otoe Indian tribe in the early 19th century. The Otoe was a great plains tribe and closely related to the Ioway and Missouria Native American tribes. He was a witty and sociable person and a successful warrior. He was not born into the position of Chief, but earned it on his own. Later in life he killed his brother in a fight after the brother bit off the end of his nose. Prairie Wolf and one of his wives, Eagle of Delight, were involved in an Indian delegation that went to Washington DC to meet with President James Monroe. It was at this time that King painted this portrait as well as the one of Eagle of Delight. Wild West art print #19
