An archival premium Quality Art Print of Iron Wood by Redoute for sale by Brandywine General Store. This hand colored stipple engraving by HJ Redoute is taken from the 1st edition of the book North America Sylva which was commissioned by the French Government to study the trees of the new United States and Canada. The first English edition was published in 1817. The Iron Wood is described in this book thus, This tree is diffused throughout the Forests of the United States, New Brusnwick, Nova Scotia and Lower Canada, but not in great numbers anywhere. In the Southern States goes by the name of Iron Wood, in the Northern states goes by Lever Wood while the French in Illinois call it Hard Wood. This small tree is found only in cool, fertile, shady places, rarely getting to 35 feet in height and 12 to 15 inches in diameter. There is not much commercial use for this tree, it is used as levers to roll the bigger timber trees in the forests to their landing places. It was also used in the New York State to make brooms and scrub brushes, but splitting and shredding the ends of the branches. It was recommended that this tree might be suitable for use in mill cogs, mallets and things of this nature. Carpinus Ostrya. Botanical art print #97
