Gris, Juan - A Portrait of Pablo Picasso

Fine Art Prints of Distinction

$7.99

A Museum Quality Print of A Portrait of Pablo Picasso by Juan Gris for sale by Brandywine General Store. The artist finished this cubist artwork in January and February of 1912. The size of the original oil on canvas is 37 by 29 inches and now hangs in the Art Institute of Chicago being gifted to this museum by Leigh B. Block. In 1906 Juan Gris traveled to Paris where he met Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque and participated in the development of cubism. Just a short six years later, Gris too was known as a Cubist and identified by at least one critic as Picasso's Disciple. In this portrait, Gris fractures Picasso's head, neck and torso into various planes and simple, geometric shapes but organized them within a regulated, compositional structure of diagonals. Despite the paintings dissolution of traditional shapes, Picasso's unique facial features - his full lips, intense dark eyes and thick black hair are still all recognizable. Gris depicts Picasso as a fellow painter with a palette in hand with the inscription "Hommage a Pablo Picasso" shows Gris's respect and admiration for the fellow cubist painter. Gris displayed this portrait at the Salon des Independants in the spring of 1912.
