The Greek artist painted this oil on canvas sometime during the period of 1577 to 1587 with the size of the original artwork being 41 by 31 inches. During El Greco's long career of painting in Spain, he did numerous works with the theme of Christ and the Cross. This one is known as the Lehman canvas and is arguably his earliest version of this subject matter. This is a devotional image, showing Christ's willingness to sacrifice himself for mankind which is expressed through his gentle embracing of the cross and his gaze towards the heavens.
