A Museum Quality Art Print of Gibraltar Island located in Lake Erie for sale by Brandywine General Store. This small 6 1/2 acre island is also known as the Gem of Lake Erie and also sometimes called Castle Island. This island just off shore from the much larger South Bass Island was used as a lookout point for Commodore Perry during the War of 1812. Connecticut owned this island until it was purchases by New York Banker Pierpont Edwards in 1807. Sandusky Ohio native, Jay Cooke bought the island from Edwards in 1864 and immediately began construction of a 15 room Victorian Gothic Mansion which is now known as Cooke Castle. The Cooke family entertained many notable people while living here including William Tecumseh Sherman, Salmon P. Chase, Presidents Rutherford B. Hayes, Grover Cleveland and Benjamin Harrison and many other famous persons of the era. The island and castle now belong to Ohio State University. Our picture shows the backside of Gibraltar Island with just the very top of Cooke's Castle showing. On the clear blue waters to the left are many sailboats enjoying a nice sunny day on the waters. To the right is a home with a red roof and a large American Flag flying to the side. Picture #248 an original archival print
