An archival premium Quality Art Print of Judith with the Head of Holofernes by Lucas Cranach the Elder for sale by Brandywine General Store. The German artist painted this oil on canvas around the year 1530. The Old Testament heroine, Judith, succeeded through her courage and cunning in entering the tent of General Holofernes at his camp outside the city of Bethulia and seduced him into bed and while full of drink, beheaded him. This ended the military threat against her people. Cranach's workshops painted many pictures with Judith as the subject and all were concentrated around the year 1530. The reason so many were painted during this time is thought to be the founding of the Schmalkaldic League, which was an armed Protestant resistance group that fought against Charles V and his Catholic Armies. Judith became the heroine and the symbol of this league. In Cranach's painting, Judith is painted in carefully nuanced shades of red and is wearing gold jewellery, which creates tension with her holding the head of Holofernes in her hand.
