A Museum Quality Art Print of a View of Pirna from Sonnenstein Castle by Bernardo Bellotto for sale by Brandywine General Store. The artist finished this oil on canvas in the year 1750 with the original measuring 53 by 93 inches in size and now hangs at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. This castle is near Dresden Germany and was built around 1460 above the Elbe River. In later years this castle was used as a mental institution and in World War II took on a more sinister purpose. The Nazi party used this castle as a killing center by installing crematoriums and gas chambers in the cellars. Over 15,000 people were gassed and killed here. Today Pirna, near the Sandstone Mountains, has a population of around 40,000 people, the city is nicknamed "gate to the Saxon Switzerland". In this composition a large grassy area is located above the city with farmers watching their cows, goats and sheep while they are eating the grass. The town is full of homes covered with red roofs with mountains and more flat grassy area in the background. Old Masters Painting #49
