Assault on Fort Sanders Civil War art Print
An archival premium quality art print of The Assault on Fort Sanders or sometimes called the Battle at Fort Loudon for sale by Brandywine General Store. This battle was fought in Knox County Tennessee on November 29, 1863. In an attempt to take Knoxville TN, the Confederates under General James Longstreet, decided that the place to attack and penetrate Union Major General Ambrose E. Burnside's fortifications was at Fort Sanders. However due to faulty intelligence by the Confederate advance guard, the CSA failed to recognize that a 12 feet wide ditch being anywhere from 4 to 10 feet deep with vertical sides was dug in front of the Fort for Yankee's protection. Confederate Officers still led their soldiers into this ditch, but without scaling ladders few men made it out of the ditch and the ones that did make it up the other side into the fort were either killed or captured. This attack only lasted about twenty minutes. This battle was the decisive one for the Knoxville campaign, this defeat, in addition to the loss of Chattanooga four days previous put much of Eastern Tennessee back into Union Hands. The Union had 440 troops involved in this battle with only 13 casualties, while the CSA had 3,000 soldiers involved but had a staggering 813 either killed, wounded or captured, making this one of the most lopsided defeats of the Civil War.
