John Quincy Adams was our sixth President and only served one term, he was the first United States President to only serve one term since his father, John Adams who was the 2nd United States President. John Quincy was born July 11, 1767 to John and Abigal (Smith) Adams in the part of Braintree Massachusetts that is now known as Quincy. The younger Adams graduated from Harvard College in 1787, Adams House at Harvard is named for both John Quincy Adams and his father, John Adams. He was considered by historians as one of the best Secretary of States in the United States. John Quincy served in this capacity under President James Monroe and was instrumental in negotiating for the purchase of Florida and he also authored the Monroe Doctrine, which forbid European powers from colonizing any more territory in the Americas. However his brash personality and unwillingness to compromise on any subject made him a poor President. Adams had a big agenda for improving the infrastructure of the Unites States, such as canals, roads, ports and etc. He also had plans for National Institutions such as College and Bank. He got some of his internal improvements accomplished, but with his unwillingness to compromise, many projects were never improved. No new states were admitted to the Union under President Adams. After he left the Presidency, Adams was elected to the House of Representatives from Massachusetts where he served until his death in 1848, when he collapsed on the House floor with a brain aneurysm. He is the only President to serve in the House of Representatives after leaving office. Picture #16 famous people portrait by Brandywine General Store.
