An archival premium Quality art Print of the famous Washington Family Portrait painted by Edward Savage in 1798 at Mount Vernon for sale by Brandywine General Store. Edward Savage's ability to paint and engrave well has always been questioned throughout history, however this picture of The Washington Family remains to this day one of the most popular paintings ever of the Father of Our Country. Work was begun by the artist on this canvas in New York City around 1791 which was still the capitol of the young United States and finally was finished at Mount Vernon several years later. This painting is life size measuring 7 feet by 9 feet four inches and the original now hangs in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. The Washington Family by Edward Savage is the only contemporary painting ever completed of President George Washington in the Mount Vernon setting. In the picture are President George and his wife Martha Washington. Martha had been widowed and quite wealthy when she married George Washington, they adopted Martha's orphaned grandchildren, Eleanor Parke Custis and George Washington Parke Custis who are the children shown in the picture along with a slave who is most likely Christopher Sheels. All the people are around a table at Mount Vernon. Pierre Charles L'Enfant's plan for the new Nation's capitol of Washington rests on the table, while columns and swags frame the Potomac River in the background. Washington himself evidently thought this was a great family portrait, he alone ordered 4 copies, one to hang in the family dining room at Mount Vernon. Famous people art print #07
