An archival premium Quality art Print of Monchousia a Native American Portrait by Charles Bird King for sale by Brandywine General Store. Monchousia was also known as Nom-pa-wa-rah, Manshenscaw and mainly by White Plume. He was born about 1765 to the Kaw Tribe in Indian lands which are now in present day Kansas and Missouri. The Kaw tribe at this time numbered about 1500 people. In 1821 White Plume was invited by William Clark to visit Washington DC as a member of a delegation of Indian leaders. This group met with President James Monroe and other American officials. This group also visited New York City, Baltimore and Philadelphia and performed war dances on the White House Lawn. Monchousia came back home from his DC trip convinced that the Indians needed to cooperate with the white man in order to survive. In 1825 White Plume was the principal Kaw chief to sign a treaty that ceded 18 million acres of tribal lands to the United States in exchange for annuities of 3,500 dollars per year for 20 years plus livestock and assistance to enable the Kaw Indians to become full time farmers. Most of the present day members of the Kaw Nation of Oklahoma can trace their lineage back to White Plume. He was also the great great grandfather of Charles Curtis, a vice president of the United States. Wild West art print #15
