This incident happened on August 19, 1812 during the War of 1812 between the British and the United States. The USS Constitution fought three major engagements during the War of 1812 with this being the most famous. Captain Isaac Hull was the Captain of this ship with a crew of 476 sailors. It was during this battle that a British sailor saw a British shot bounce off the Constitution's hull to which he yelled "her sides are made of iron", thus was the origination of her famous nickname "Old Ironsides". During this battle after a few short minutes, the Constitution shot off the Guirriere's masts and she then plunged into the sea. Famous people art print #42
