The artist finished this oil on canvas in the year 1852. The size of the original artwork is 35 by 50 inches and now hangs in the Smithsonian Art Museum. This scene took place on October 25, 1812 during the War of 1812 between the British and the new government of the United States. This seascape depicts the victory of the frigate United States over the British ship Macedonian, this was a huge morale boost for the newly formed navy of the United States over the much more powerful rival England, who had dominated the seas for many years. The Captain of the United States was Stephen Decatur, this ship damaged the Macedonian's hull, then dismasted and captured her, after this incident, Decatur became an American hero.
